Mold growth/infestation is a common problem that nearly all homeowners encounter at some point. Certain kinds of molds are known health hazards and can lead to respiratory problems and other ailments. Conditions that typically lead to mold growth include, dark, warm, wet and stagnant environments (usually associated with some form of water damage). Mold needs a food source to grow and almost all homes have plenty of that within the structural materials that make up the structure of the home (ex. drywall which has paper backing). If you notice mold growing within your property, chances are there are some underlying conditions (plumbing leak is the most common reason).
Things you can do to help prevent cross contamination of non-affected areas:
- Isolate the Infested Area: You need to seal off all the rooms that are affected to prevent mold spores from spreading to other parts of your house.
- Get the Water Problem Fixed: Mold growth is typically a problem caused by unchecked moisture on the floor or walls. If you suspect that you have a mold problem, you should have your plumbing examined, and fix any leaking issues.
- Put Affected Materials in Plastic Bags: Check whether there are any wet or moldy materials such as clothes and books and put them in plastic bags for disposal.
- DO NOT disturb areas affected.
